The Complete Moving Checklist for Gold Coast Renters
A week-by-week guide so nothing falls through the cracks on your next rental move.
Moving rentals on the Gold Coast comes with its own set of headaches — bond inspections, lease timelines, utility transfers, and the nagging feeling you've forgotten something. This checklist breaks it all down into a simple week-by-week plan so you can move out of your current place, get your bond back, and settle into your new place without forgetting something important.
The checklist works the same whether you're going from Surfers to Southport or Robina to Burleigh.
4 weeks before moving day
Get these done first and the rest of the move is straightforward.
- Give written notice to your property manager. Most Gold Coast leases require 14–28 days' written notice. Check your lease agreement and send it in writing. Email is fine, but keep a copy.
- Book your exit condition report. Contact your property manager to schedule the final inspection. Aim for a date 1–2 days before your lease ends to give yourself time for any touch-ups.
- Book your crates. Reserve your crate package from Coastal Packing Hire now. Collect from our Gold Coast location before your move date and pack at your own pace. The earlier you book, the more likely your preferred collection slot is available.
- Start decluttering. Anything you haven't used in a year, donate or sell. Less stuff means fewer crates, less loading, and a faster move. Gold Coast op shops like Vinnies and Salvos are always accepting donations, and Facebook Marketplace moves things fast.
- Get quotes from removalists. If you're hiring a removalist, book early. Gold Coast removalists fill up quickly on weekends and end-of-month dates. Get at least two quotes. The spread between Gold Coast removalists can be $200+ for the same job.
2 weeks before moving day
Two weeks out, sort the admin and start packing anything you won't need before moving day.
- Transfer or connect utilities. Call your electricity, gas, internet, and water providers to arrange disconnection at your current address and connection at the new one. On the Gold Coast, most energy retailers need 3–5 business days' notice. Don't forget to update your NBN or broadband — Gold Coast internet transfers can take up to two weeks depending on the provider.
- Set up mail redirection through Australia Post. You can do this online — 1 month costs around $37, 3 months around $55. Cheap insurance against missed bills.
- Update your address with banks, Medicare, electoral roll, car registration (QLD Transport), insurance, subscriptions, and your employer. This is the most-forgotten step — make a list and work through it.
- Start packing non-essentials. Books, decorations, out-of-season clothes, spare linen, and anything you won't touch before moving day. Our plastic crates stack neatly against a wall and take up less floor space than cardboard boxes. Not sure how many you need? Check our crate quantity guide.
- If your lease requires professional cleaning, book a Gold Coast bond cleaner now. End-of-month slots go fast. Budget $250–$450 depending on the size of your rental.
1 week before moving day
Most of your packing happens this week. You should have your crates by now — if not, get in touch and we'll sort a collection slot for you.
- Pack room by room. Start with the rooms you use least — spare bedrooms, garage, study. Label each crate with the room it's going to at the new place. Our crates have flat surfaces that take a whiteboard marker perfectly — wipe it off after and they're clean for the next person.
- Photograph your rental. Before you start moving anything out, take detailed photos of every room, including walls, floors, carpets, and fixtures. These are your evidence if there's a dispute over bond deductions. Timestamps on your phone camera are all the proof you need.
- Defrost the fridge if you're taking it — switch it off 24 hours before the move and leave the door open. Wipe it down. If the fridge stays with the rental, clean it inside and out. Dirty fridges are one of the most common bond deduction items on the Gold Coast.
- Confirm your removalist by calling to check the date, time, access details, and any parking restrictions at both addresses. Some Gold Coast apartment buildings require lift bookings for moves, so check with your building manager.
- Pack an essentials box. One crate with everything you'll need on the first night: phone charger, toiletries, a change of clothes, medication, kettle, tea and coffee, toilet paper, basic cleaning supplies, and a towel. Keep this crate with you, not on the truck.
Moving day
Keep this list on your phone and tick things off as you go.
- Do a final walkthrough. Check every cupboard, drawer, shelf, and the garage. Then check the garage again, because there's always something in the garage. Check the laundry, balcony, and any storage cages. It's easy to leave things behind in a rush.
- Read the meters. Take photos of your electricity and water meters before you leave. This protects you from being charged for usage after your lease ends.
- Drop keys, remotes, and any access cards to your property manager. Get written confirmation that you've returned them — a text or email is fine.
- Check in at the new place. Before unloading, walk through the new rental and note any existing damage. Take photos immediately and send them to your new property manager within the first 24 hours. This is your incoming condition report and it protects your new bond.
After the move
- Return your crates. Once you've unpacked, drop your crates back to our Gold Coast location at a time that suits you. No rush — our hire period gives you time to unpack properly.
- Follow up on your bond. In Queensland, your landlord has 14 days after your lease ends to lodge a bond refund or dispute. If you haven't heard anything after two weeks, contact the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) directly. Keep all your photos and the exit condition report handy.
- Update your electoral enrolment — it's compulsory in Australia to update your electoral address within 8 weeks of moving. Do it online at the AEC website and it takes 2 minutes.
Gold Coast renter moving tips
Gold Coast-specific traps that catch renters out:
- End-of-month moves are chaos. If your lease allows flexibility, move mid-week or mid-month. You'll pay less for removalists and have more availability for bond cleaners.
- Gold Coast humidity damages cardboard. If your crates or boxes sit in a garage or carport for a few days, cardboard absorbs moisture and weakens. Plastic crates are waterproof — they won't soften or collapse in the humidity. See the full comparison here.
- Apartment buildings have rules. High-rises in Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, and Southport often require you to book a service lift and use specific loading docks. Some restrict moving to weekday business hours only. Check with building management at least a week ahead.
- Keep receipts for bond cleaning. If your property manager disputes the clean, a receipt from a licensed bond cleaner is your strongest evidence. Most Gold Coast bond cleaners offer a guarantee — use one that does.
